Paving truck tips over and spills fuel in crash in Willimantic

In Willimantic on Monday, a paving truck rolled over and leaked fuel after colliding with several other vehicles on Route 66.

According to Lt. Matthew Solak of the Willimantic Police Department, police and firefighters responded to the area of ​​Route 66 and Route 32 at 2:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a multi-vehicle crash involving a commercial vehicle.

Solak said emergency crews arrived to find that a large paving truck traveling eastbound on Route 66 had fallen on its side after colliding with several other vehicles traveling in the same direction.

According to the Willimantic Fire Department, firefighters had to perform an extrication from the paving truck.

Police said authorities had no immediate information about possible injuries in the multi-vehicle crash.

According to fire officials, the paving truck leaked fuel after the collision.

Firefighters received mutual aid from the Mansfield Fire Department and the University of Connecticut.

The crash is being investigated by the Willimantic Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team with assistance from inspectors from the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

Police said Route 66 in the area of ​​the accident was closed while authorities responded to the scene.
