Gayle King’s son William Bumpus Jr. is married

On the latest segment of CBS mornings, co-host Gayle King took a break from regular programming to report on a very special story: the anchor announced that her son, William Bumpus Jr., married Elise Smith on Sunday, June 2, 2024. son Will and my new favorite daughter-in-law Elise Smith tied the knot on Sunday,” she said during the broadcast. King then revealed the location: Oprah Winfrey’s home. “Oprah was there, of course, because it was at Oprah’s house,” she joked. “It’s always nice when she lets us use her house.” Although the TV host was present, the affair was “solely for the family,” King said.

King said the highlight of the affair for her was the exchange of vows. “They both wrote their own vows, and at one point Will said, ‘I know the man I am, but with you I know the man I want to be,’” the television journalist said, reflecting on the sentence that gave her ‘goosebumps’. However, every part of the wedding was a testament to their deep bond, King said. “I’ve never seen such love as those two,” she said. “You go to weddings and everyone is in love, but there was something about these two that I thought was really epic: it was next level.”

Later that day, King took to Instagram to give her followers and fans a glimpse into the pre-wedding festivities. “Big wedding weekend for favorite son Will and my favorite daughter-in-law, the beautiful @elisemariesmith,” she captioned her post. “Swipe left for photos from the rehearsal, with @oprah there… she turns out to be a pretty good wedding planner! Then a welcome dinner at the @rosewoodmiramarbeach…shout out to @emmarosefloral, you killed it! The evening ended with an impromptu dance party in a room without a dance floor! Black people always find a way, especially my family 💃🏽🕺🏽.”

The first few photos in the carousel were taken in a grassy area, supposedly Oprah’s backyard. The images show Smith donning a strapless white ruffled dress with a flared skirt, an oversized bow on the bodice and white platform shoes. In the photos, Bumpus Jr. is wearing a light blue suit and beige loafers. King stunned in a floor-length dress with long sleeves in vibrant hues, all-over pleats and an empire waist. Oprah is also seen in a few of the photos, one conferring with what appears to be the planning team and the other with King in front of a greenery-adorned trellis. In each of the shots, the TV presenter wears a tight-fitting black dress with long sleeves and a side slit at the legs.

In the next part of the carousel, King took viewers to the welcome dinner. In a video of the setup, the camera captures the entryway, which was covered in lush flowers and greenery, before showing the spread out tables covered in white linens, chinoiserie-style plates, mauve pillar candles and flowery centerpieces. The clip also highlights a bar overlooking the ocean. Another video, taken during the welcome dinner, shows King, the honorary couple and guests singing and dancing to a live musician.

The last two videos in the carousel show what happened later that evening at the welcome dinner. The footage shows Bumpus Jr. and Smith dance and laugh with each other and their guests. After demonstrating the dance move, “raising the roof,” the groom takes Smith’s hands and spins her around before grabbing his mother to dance. Another clip documents King — wearing a floral minidress and tiered skirt — twirling on the dance floor with the newlyweds and many of their guests. Since this celebration was a family affair, King noted that the duo will host a larger wedding with friends later.
