Budget approved in Alexander County with tax rate reduction

The Alexander County Board of Commissioners passed the 2024-2025 budget on a 3-2 vote Monday, with Commissioners Marty Pennell and Larry Yoder opposing it. The new budget includes a two-cent property tax cut, lowering the property tax rate to 65 cents per $100 assessment. Commissioners Pennell and Yoder stated that they believe the new budget is sound, but the reduction in property taxes are somewhat premature.

Interim County Manager Ben Faulkenberry said the 2024-2025 general budget totals $56,616,494, which is a two percent decrease from this year’s budget. The new budget includes a five percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) for all county employees, a continued focus on public safety, capital projects, additional school funding and more.
