Vat Savitri 2024: Vrat Katha of this holy fast

Vat Savitri is a tribute to Savitri, the mythical wife of Satyavan who saved his soul from the deity of death, Yama. The celebration tells the fascinating story of Savitri and Satyavan. Savitri was the daughter of King Ashvapati. King Dhumatsen’s son Satyavan won her heart. His life was too short, based on the prognosis of his horoscope. Savitri nevertheless wanted to marry him. After her marriage, Savitri began to atone for Satyavan’s long life. Satyavan died unexpectedly one day while sleeping under a banyan tree. The God of Death, Yama, sent his legate to retrieve Satyavan’s body. However, Savitri approached her husband and refused to sacrifice his body. Despite everything, the messengers could not take Satyavan with them.

Finally, the god of death, Yama, materialized before Savitri and asked permission to take Satyavan’s body. Savitri continued to feel uneasy. So Yama promised Savitri a boon. She asked about her in-laws’ health. He complied with her request. She continued to follow Yama as he took Satyavan’s corpse. Yama offered her another boon to dissuade her from following him. She asked about her parents’ health. Yama also bestowed this blessing. However, she continued to follow Yama and remained stubborn.
