Governors Days

June 6-8 in Grimes.

Governors Days are held from June 6 to 8 in the Governors District, in the heart of Grimes. Complete with concerts, parades, carnivals and much, much more; Governors Days has something for everyone. This great community event is led by a vibrant group of dedicated volunteers and organized with the help of Grimes Chamber & Economic Development. Admission to the festival is free thanks to the many great corporate sponsors from the community. The theme of this year’s Governors Days is ‘In our element’. Friday party

6:00pm – 9:30pm Friday June 7 at Pattee Park Bandshell, Perry.

The Perry Chamber of Commerce will host Friday Fest with live music from Suede from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM on June 7 at the Pattee Park Bandshell. Kick off the summer with live music, food and family fun! Bring your own garden chairs or blankets, garden games and your own basket of refreshments (beer and wine allowed; but no glass allowed). Bring a picnic or purchase food from local vendors on site, including grilled items from the Perry Fire Department and junior class brownie sundaes. Sunshine Face Painting and Rotary Mini Golf will also be present.

Outdoor summer movie

8:30 PM Friday, June 7 at 2200 Walnut St., Granger.

The Granger Parks & Recreation Department kicks off its outdoor summer film series with “Lightyear” on Friday, June 7. The film will be shown on the north side of the community center on the grass. Popcorn and candy are available for purchase. Upcoming films include ‘Back to the Future’ on June 28, ‘Elemental’ on July 19 and ‘The Super Mario Bros.’ Movie’ on August 23.

Movies in the park

8:45 PM Friday, June 7 at Centennial Park, Waukee.

Enjoy a free movie night in the park with Disney’s “Encanto” on Friday, June 7. Grab a comfy chair or blanket and join Waukee Parks and Rec for the show, with refreshments provided by Hilltop Church. The film will be shown at dusk, around 8:45 PM

Waukee Palooza

4:00 PM – 10:00 PM Saturday, June 8 at 1005 E Hickman Rd, Waukee.

Join the Rotary Club of Waukee for Waukee Palooza, a FREE family-friendly event, on Saturday, June 8. Activities for the whole family include face painting, balloon art, food trucks, live music, 50/50 raffle and silent auction.

Meet me in Minburn

5.30pm – 9pm Saturday 8th June at Meek Park, Minburn.

The Meet Me in Minburn series kicks off with a free concert on Saturday 8 June. A voluntary donation meal will be served by the Friends of the Minburn Library from 5.30pm to 7pm. Kile Jackson will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. The outdoor skating rink will also be open, with free skate rental.

Korner Kone open-air film evening

6pm Saturday, June 8 at 504 14th St., Dallas Center.

Korner Kone Eats N’ Treats invites the community to an evening of live music and an outdoor movie on Saturday, June 8. The event will include free face painting, games, prizes, food and live music by Paul Little, followed by a star-studded film. The live music and fun starts at 6 p.m., followed by a showing of Disney’s “Moana” at 9 p.m. No tickets needed, just bring your family, friends and a lawn chair or blanket.

Wine on the Prairie

Saturday, June 8 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Brenton Arboretum.

Come and enjoy a unique experience at The Brenton Arboretum. This is an opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine and light bites while enjoying all that the arboretum and nature have to offer while overlooking the arboretum grounds. Enjoy a beautiful sunset as you mingle with fellow Arboretum supporters. Tickets cost €50 for members and €60 for non-members and can be purchased online.

Free merchant movies

11am Wednesday, June 12 at Perry Grand 3 Theaters.

The Perry Grand 3 Theaters continues its 2024 summer movie season on Wednesday, June 12 with “Despicable Me.” All films will be shown on Wednesdays through August 7 at 11 a.m. Admission is free thanks to local sponsors. Woodward Public Library summer reading program

1:30 PM Wednesday, June 12 at Woodward United Methodist Church.

The summer reading program at the Woodward Public Library started June 1. The theme is ‘Get Caught Reading’, focusing on the importance of reading for pleasure and learning. The program runs throughout the month of June with the awards party on June 27. Children aged 2 to 5 meet every Monday at 10am. K-5 classes meet every Tuesday at 10am. Teens meet every Wednesday at 10am. Special programs will be held at Woodward United Methodist Church, including Diamond Painting with Unwind Designs at 1:30 PM on June 12; Cartoonist Buck Jones at 1pm on June 13; Instruments through Time at 2pm on June 17; Balloon workshop at 1:30 PM on June 18.

Free community supper

5:30-6:30 PM Wednesday, June 12 at Heartland Church of Christ, 14417 J Ave, Perry.

Everyone is welcome to join us for dinner at Heartland Church of Christ on the second Wednesday of the month – free of charge. Dine in or carry out. Disability accessible. Take a night off from cooking and let us serve you! The June 12 sacrament includes registration for our Vacation Bible School scheduled for July 15-19 for primary and sixth grades. Come eat, have face painting, play games and register!

Observing owls

9-10 a.m. Thursday, June 13 at Voas Nature Area, 19286 Lexington Road, Minburn.

Dallas County Conservation Board is making a joke of this year’s Summer Wildlife Series by kicking off with owls. Learn about Iowa owls, their calls, and meet the DCCB Barred Owl Education Ambassador. Registration is required via DCCB’s Eventbrite page.

Film at Heritage

6pm Thursday, June 13 at Heritage Park, Grimes.

Join Grimes Parks and Rec on June 13 at Heritage Park for a free screening of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.” The activities start at 6:00 PM and the film starts at 7:00 PM. The film is shown on a special outdoor screen with a perfect picture (even in daylight) so that you don’t miss a second of the film. There will be free popcorn, but bring any snacks, drinks, and chairs/blankets you need from home.

Dallas County Pre-Fair Rodeo

7:30 PM June 14 and 15 at Dallas County Fairgrounds, Adel.

Join the Dallas County Fair Association for the two-day pre-fair rodeo in partnership with Wright Rodeo Company. Gates open at 6:00 PM and the rodeo follows at 7:30 PM. Live music will follow each night of the rodeo, with Royce Johns on Friday and Jordan Beem on Saturday. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 12.

BAKOON ride

Saturday, June 15 along Raccoon River Valley Trail.

The 70-mile ride on the Raccoon River Valley Trail combines the love of bacon and the love of biking, with bacon stops in every town along the route. The theme for the 10th annual event is Bacoonritaville. Bacon stops include Waukee: Bacon Breakfast Taco; Dallas Center: Maple Bacon Donut in downtown; Minburn: Bacon breakfast taco at Casa Oaxaca Mexican Grill; Perry: Pulled Pork Sandwich among the Proletariat; Jamaica: drinking station; Herndon: Berkwood Farms Hot Dog; Redfield: Berkwood Farms pork burger in the city park; Adel: Thelma’s ice cream sandwiches at Brickyard Cafe; Waukee: Peanut Butter Bacon Bar at Mickey’s Irish Pub. The BACooN Ride, presented by Veridian Credit Union, starts at 7 a.m. in Waukee and travels counterclockwise toward Dallas Center, Minburn and Perry. Bird walk June

8-10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at Kuehn Conservation Area, 32828 Houston Trail, Earlham.

Kuehn Conservation Area is a birding destination in Dallas County. It has a fantastic diversity of habitats and is located along the Raccoon River corridor. Spring migration is almost over, so the birds we see and hear will likely be nesting. This will be a moderate walk on flat terrain. Novice bird watchers, including children, are welcome and encouraged. Binoculars and books are provided. Registration is required via DCCB’s Eventbrite page.

New Hope Church Car Show

9am – 1pm Saturday, June 15 at New Hope Church, 25712 Hwy 6, Adel.

New Hope Adel is hosting a car show to raise money through freewill donations and awareness of Operation Christmas Child. Bring your vehicle to share, car, truck, tractor or bus. There will be food and fun activities for the whole family. No entry fee or pre-registration, just a voluntary donation in support of Operation Christmas Child.

Iowa Cubs – Little League Takeover

10 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at Perry Little League Fields.
