Two men were hospitalized in critical condition after a falling tree struck their vehicles in Highland Township on Wednesday, officials said.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on South Duck Lake Road, south of Livingston Road, during a period of severe weather in the area.

The injured men are a 35-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio who was driving a 2015 Hino box truck contracted to the US Postal Service, and a 23-year-old man from Highland Township who was driving a 2018 Ford F150 pickup . the sheriff’s office said.

The tree broke off during that afternoon’s storm and landed first on the box truck, which left the road and struck trees, then landed on the roof of the pickup, the sheriff’s office said.

Paramedics from the Highland Township Fire Department transported the men to area hospitals, the sheriff’s office said. It is believed both men were wearing seat belts when they were injured and alcohol does not appear to be a factor, the sheriff’s office said.

Duck Lake Road was closed until nearly 9 p.m. due to the incident, which is under investigation by the sheriff’s crash reconstruction unit.
