I-215 southbound closed after box truck fire, HAZMAT situation

Southbound Interstate 215 on the west side is closed after a box truck caught fire. Teams carrying hazardous materials have been called in.

The incident happened Wednesday around 5:30 p.m. after the 4700 South interchange and before the Redwood Road exit.

Utah Highway Patrol officials said there were no injuries and the driver was able to get out of the vehicle.

Details about what the truck was carrying were not available, but officials dispatched HAZMAT to determine any safety concerns.

Sergeant Cameron Roden said fluids from the truck flowed into all lanes of the roadway.

Drivers were pulled off the road at 4700 South. Traffic was backed up along the 3900 South interchange.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

Officials expected the highway to be closed for at least an hour.
