How does the NBA draft and free agency work?

With the Celtics’ 2024 championship secured, the NBA offseason has officially begun. The 2024 NBA draft and free agency are next on the league’s calendar.

Here’s a look at what’s ahead for the NBA.

When is the 2024 NBA Draft?

The draft will take place from June 26 to 27. The broadcast will air both nights at 8:00 PM ET on ABC, ESPN and ESPN+.

Where is the 2024 NBA Draft?

The first night of the draft takes place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The second night will take place at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in downtown Manhattan.

What is the format of the 2024 NBA draft?

The draft will consist of a total of 58 picks, spread over two rounds. The first round contains picks 1-30, followed by picks 31-58 in the second round.

The top 14 selections of the first round were determined by a lottery involving teams that did not make this year’s playoffs. The rest of the draft is done in order of winning percentage.

Who are some of the top prospects in the 2024 NBA Draft?

French forward Zaccharie Risacher is projected to be the first overall pick in ESPN’s latest mock draft. The Hawks also have worked out Connecticut big man Donovan Clingan, Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard, NBA G League Ignite standout Matas Buzelis, Colorado forward Cody Williams and Ron Holland, a former consensus five-star prospect from Dallas. French 7-footer Alex Sarr has also attracted interest at the top of the draft, while Bronny James, the son of NBA star LeBron James, has also attracted public attention.

When Does NBA Free Agency Start?

NBA free agency begins on June 30 at 6:00 PM ET. Teams can officially open negotiations with all free agents at that time. Teams may begin signing free agents on July 6 at 12:01 PM ET.

How does NBA Free Agency work?

The new collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and its players goes into effect this offseason. Under the new CBA, all 30 teams will now be allowed to negotiate exclusively with their own upcoming free agents immediately after the NBA Finals. Previously, teams were excluded from these negotiations until the official start of the free agency period.
