A big day for the Big Five

Drexel is an official member of the Women’s Big Five

VILLANOVA, PA. 6/6/2024 –

Yes, it’s a big day for the Big Five.

During a media event at Villanova University, the Drexel Dragons officially became members of the Women’s Big Five. The women’s teams will compete in the pod format that the Big Five men adopted a season ago. The championship will be decided when the pod winners meet in the Big Five Classic tripleheader at Finneran Pavilion on December 6, 2024.

The announcement was made by Dan Hilferty, who is now the Big Five’s ambassador. He was named as part of the new leadership team. Hilferty is an alumnus of Saint Joseph’s University and serves as chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectacor. He also serves as governor of the Philadelphia Flyers. He stated that the Big Five name will continue and it will have six members. In addition, the men’s championship will remain in effect as last season and the Wells Fargo Center will be the site of the championship tripleheader for the next three seasons. The Men’s Classic will take place on December 7, 2024.

Drexel in the Women’s Big Five

Drexel women’s basketball welcome

The Women’s Big Five will be the same as last season’s Men’s Big Five format. The schools will be divided into two pods of three teams. Pod 1 is La Salle, Temple and Drexel. Pod 2 will consist of Saint Joseph’s, Villanova and Penn. The pods will have a round robin format with games played at campus locations. The first-place teams in each pod will meet to determine the Big Five title. The second-place teams will play and the third-place teams will face off as part of the Tripleheader on Dec. 6 at Villanova.

After the 2024 Big Five Classic, the men’s and women’s pods will remain synced and rotate every two years. The Women’s Big Five Classic site will change annually. These locations will be mentioned at a later date.

The teams can play each other during the season outside of the pod seeding crossover, but not as a Big Five game. La Salle and Saint Joseph’s play each other twice a season as part of the Atlantic 10. Mel Greenberg reported in The Guru Report that Temple and Saint Joseph’s had a potential second game scheduled, a strength of the scheduled game outside the format.

From the previous Big Five to the new Big Five

Saint Joseph’s Coach Cindy Griffin spoke and rang a cowbell and threw streamers to illustrate the desire to preserve Big Five traditions. Something she grew up with.

Change is inevitable. So today we celebrate Philadelphia basketball, the Big Five and collegiate women’s basketball. And a day for the coaches to focus on something other than the transfer portal.
