Lionsgate announces next Hunger Games film, based on a new novel

Lionsgate has announced the next movie in their Hunger Games franchise, which will be based on a new novel by Suzanne Collins. As THR reports, the studio has announced that they will be adapting Collins’ newly announced film The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Harvest. Francis Lawrence is in talks to direct the film again, having directed every film since 2013 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

The new book (and movie), like the most recent movie, will be a prequel to the original story that focused on Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence in the films). Sunrise on the harvest Set 24 years before these events, it revolves around the 50th Hunger Games, which were won by Haymitch Abernathy (played by Woody Harrelson in the films).

The story takes place 40 years after the events of the most recent film, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. That film was a big hit for Lionsgate when it was released last November, grossing $337.4 million against a $100 million budget.

“The Second Quarrel is legendary and looms large in the history of the Games, even into the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter of a century later. Like fans around the world, we eagerly await this exciting return to Panem,” Lionsgate’s Fogelson said in a statement.

No word yet on casting for the new film, which will be released on November 20, 2026.
